Data sources and licences

Where the data in Birdbird comes from, the terms it is used under, and what it must not be used for. Birdbird is training material: none of the data below replaces official, current aeronautical information.

Aeronautical data

Airspace, airports, navaids and route points used by Route Explorer and the briefing pack.

Not included. These AIPs are not used until the publishers give permission. You can add the points you need yourself under My fixes in Route Explorer.

Not used

Official AIP dataBirdbird does not use data from an official AIP without the publisher's permission. Route Explorer and the briefing pack are not official VFR or IFR charts. Always check positions, airspace and frequencies against the current AIP and charts.

Terrain and maps

The terrain profile, the 3D terrain view and the highest-terrain figure per map square are computed from public digital elevation data.

Terrain TilesMapzen, hosted on AWS Open Data

Elevation for the terrain profile and the 3D terrain. The tiles combine several public elevation datasets, listed below.

The highest-terrain figure is Birdbird's own number from these data: the highest point plus 300 ft for unknown obstacles, rounded up to the next 100 ft. It is not an official minimum safe altitude or maximum elevation figure.

Magnetic variation

World Magnetic Model 2025NOAA NCEI and the British Geological Survey

Magnetic variation for each leg in Route Explorer and the navigation log, used to turn true track into magnetic track. The model is valid from 2025 to 2030.

World Magnetic Model (WMM2025), NOAA NCEI and BGS

Charted variation in the AIP can differ slightly from the model, because charts are updated on their own cycle. For planning on a real flight, use the variation on the current chart.

Regulations and standards referenced

  • EASA Easy Access Rules for Air OperationsPlanning minima and fuel rules in the briefing pack (for example NCO, NCC and CAT operations). The briefing pack states the revision it is based on.
  • Birdbird EASA rules libraryA curated set of references used by Flight Intelligence and the briefing pack instructor: alternates, planning minima, fuel, aerodrome operating minima, approach, VMC and IFR rules, low-visibility operations, PBN, icing and oxygen. Each entry gives the rule ID, a short summary in Birdbird’s own words, the revision it is based on (Easy Access Rules for Air Operations, Revision 24, March 2026; SERA, revision from August 2025) and links to the official text on the EASA website and on EUR-Lex. Entries checked against the EASA text are marked as such. It is not a live feed: Birdbird checks for new revisions and updates the library, and the date of the last check is shown with it.
  • EASA Easy Access Rules for AircrewThe structure of the ATPL theory subjects that the learning path follows.
  • EASA Easy Access Rules for SERARules of the air used in the briefing and radio material.
  • ICAO conceptsStandard terminology, phraseology and procedure design concepts, such as holding entries and approach segments, described in Birdbird's own words.

How they are usedRegulations are summarised and referenced, not reproduced. Rules change: always use the current consolidated version published by EASA, the national authority and ICAO, and your operator's manuals where they apply.

The EASA rules libraryWhen you ask the instructor about rules, the matching library entries are sent with your question, and the answer cites them as chips that open the official text in a new tab. Birdbird cannot read the EASA website while you use it, so the library shows the revision and date it was checked rather than claiming to be up to date. Browse the library · EASA Easy Access Rules

Teaching models and aircraft values

Teaching models

The labs use simplified physics to show how things relate. Each lab says what it leaves out. Use the numbers to understand, not to make operational decisions.

Aircraft values are typical

Figures for the light twin, the A320 and the King Air B200 are typical, rounded or illustrative values for teaching. They are not taken from, and do not replace, the AFM, the FCOM or the manufacturer's data.

Questions written for Birdbird

Tests and question banks are written in Birdbird's own words to check understanding. They are not copied from any official or commercial question bank.

Not for operational useAlways follow the AIP, the aircraft flight manual, your operator's procedures and your instructor.

Fonts and software

All fonts and libraries are served from Birdbird itself. No page loads fonts or scripts from a third-party service.
