DA42 glass cockpit trainer

A twin-engine trainer with a primary flight display, a multi-function display and an autopilot, styled after the G1000 glass cockpit. Practise scans, autopilot modes, ILS approaches and engine failures in the browser.

Knobs

Scroll on a knob, or drag up and down. Dual knobs: the outer ring and the inner knob are separate. Click the inner knob to push it. Keyboard: focus a knob, arrows turn the inner knob, Shift + arrows the outer, Enter pushes.

Flight plan

FPL opens the flight plan. Push FMS for the cursor, turn the outer FMS knob to move it, turn the inner knob to insert a waypoint, CLR removes one. MENU gives Activate Leg and Delete Flight Plan.

Direct-to and approaches

D→, type the ident with the FMS knob (or the keyboard), ENT, ENT. PROC → SELECT APPROACH → approach → transition → LOAD or ACTIVATE. For an ILS the localizer frequency is tuned for you, and the CDI switches from GPS to LOC1 on final.

Radios and CDI

NAV and COM: the outer ring tunes MHz, the inner knob kHz, push the inner knob to pick NAV1/NAV2, ⇄ swaps standby and active. The CDI softkey cycles GPS → NAV1 → NAV2.

How to read the displays

Colour carries meaning. Learn the colours and most of the screen reads itself.

Cyan: what you selected

Heading bug, selected altitude, altimeter setting, the selected vertical speed. Things you set with a knob.

Magenta: trends and commands

Speed and altitude trend vectors (where you will be in 6 seconds), the turn-rate arc, the flight director bars and the ground track.

Green: VOR and LOC, active modes

The course needle and deviation bar for VOR or localizer, the glideslope diamond, and active autopilot modes. White modes are armed and waiting.

Yellow and red: attention

Your aircraft symbol is yellow. Yellow text is a caution, red is a warning. A red line on the speed tape marks Vmca, the blue line is Vyse.

Speed tape colours

White arc: flap range. Green: normal range. Yellow: caution, smooth air only. Red: never exceed and below stall.

Autopilot modes

HDG follows the heading bug. NAV and APR capture a VOR or localizer course. ALT holds altitude, VS holds a climb or descent rate, FLC holds a speed. ALTS means the selected altitude is armed for capture.

Keyboard

↑ ↓ ← → or WASDPitch and roll. Up is nose down, like a yoke. Hold Shift for full deflection.
Q E · XRudder left and right (stays where you leave it) · centre the rudder
+ −Power up and down, both levers
[ ]Elevator trim nose down and up
F V · G · BFlaps down and up · gear · brakes while held
Space · ZAutopilot disconnect · engage autopilot
H J · K LHeading bug left and right · selected altitude down and up

A gamepad also works: left stick for pitch and roll, right stick sideways for rudder, triggers for power.
